How the kit is used
Basic resuscitation follows the airway-then-breathing sequence. The foot-operated suction pump clears blood, vomit or secretions from the mouth and throat; a Guedel (oropharyngeal) airway of the right size stops the tongue falling back and blocking the airway of an unconscious patient; and the hand-operated resuscitator, a self-inflating bag used with a face mask, pushes air into the lungs.
Separate resuscitator sets for newborns, children and adults let the bag and mask be matched to the patient's size, and the six airway sizes run from the smallest neonatal size up to adult. Because nothing needs electricity, the kit works in delivery rooms, emergency departments, ambulances and field settings alike.
