How the delivery set is used
At birth, the umbilical cord is clamped with the two Kocher forceps placed a short distance apart and cut between them with the Mayo scissors; the forceps hold the cord for the time needed to tie it. Blunt/blunt tips on both pairs of scissors lower the risk of injuring mother or baby when cutting close to them.
An episiotomy, a planned cut to enlarge the vaginal opening during delivery, is often decided on at the last moment, so the long curved episiotomy scissors must be at hand at every birth. For that reason the set is kept sterile and immediately available in the delivery room, and a separate suture set is used afterwards to repair the episiotomy.
