How the kit is used in teaching
In the Bohr model, protons and neutrons sit together in a small central nucleus and electrons occupy shells around it, with at most 2, 8, 18 and 32 electrons in the first four shells (2n^2). Building atoms by hand makes these rules concrete: students place the protons that fix the element, add neutrons to reach the mass number, and fill the shells from the inside outward.
The same pieces show isotopes, by changing only the number of neutrons, and ions, by adding or removing electrons from the outer shell. The shell layouts on both the lid and the underside of the box give room to build and compare structures, for example sodium and the sodium ion, or carbon-12 and carbon-14.
- Open the box and use the lid or the underside of the box as the working surface.
- Place protons and neutrons in the nucleus for the chosen atom.
- Add electrons to the shells, filling the inner shells first.
- Change the neutrons to make an isotope, or the outer electrons to make an ion.
- Return the pieces to the built-in storage after the lesson.
