How the model is used in teaching
A demonstration model has to be large enough to read from the back of the room. Here the nuclei, shells and particles are separate magnetic pieces, so the teacher places only the parts needed for each example directly on the whiteboard and can write labels, charges and mass numbers beside them.
With two nuclei, two atoms can be shown together: an atom and its ion, two isotopes of the same element, or two elements from the same group. Adding electrons shell by shell shows how the outer shell sets valency, and moving an electron from one atom to the other introduces ionic bonding. After the lesson the pieces go back on the metal storage board, which hangs on the wall.
