How the model is used in teaching
Skin is the body's largest organ, and its three layers each have a job. The epidermis on the surface is a protective barrier that is constantly renewed; the dermis beneath it holds the hair follicles, glands, nerves, receptors and blood vessels; and the deeper subcutaneous layer stores fat and insulates the body. This model presents all three layers so that students can see how thin the epidermis is compared with the dermis.

Each follicle has a sebaceous gland that oils the hair and skin, while the sweat glands open onto the surface and cool the body by evaporation. The receptors and nerves show how skin detects touch, pressure, pain and temperature.
