How the model is used in teaching
Digestion is a sequence, and this model lets students follow it in order. Food enters at the mouth, is swallowed through the pharynx and oesophagus, is churned and partly digested in the stomach, and then passes into the small intestine, where the duodenum receives bile from the liver and gall bladder and digestive juice from the pancreas. Water is absorbed in the large intestine before waste reaches the rectum.
The cut-away sections make the model useful for teaching. With the front wall of the stomach and the transverse colon removed, the structures behind them come into view, and the opened duodenum, caecum and rectum show the inner surfaces of the gut.
