How the model is used in teaching
Inside each lung the airways branch again and again: the bronchi divide into bronchioles, and the smallest bronchioles open into alveolar ducts lined with alveoli, the tiny air sacs where gas exchange takes place. This junction cannot be seen with the naked eye, so a model is the practical way to show it in class.
Oxygen passes from the air in the alveoli across a very thin wall into the surrounding capillaries, while carbon dioxide moves the other way. The model helps students connect the branching airway with this process and understand why the very large combined surface area of the alveoli matters for breathing.
