How the model is used in teaching
Each kidney filters the blood to remove urea and excess water and salts. Blood arrives through the renal artery, which branches into smaller vessels, including the interlobular arteries, that supply the nephrons; filtered blood returns through the interlobular and renal veins. Urine produced by the nephrons drains into the minor calyces, which join to form the major calyces and then empty through the renal pelvis into the ureter.
A longitudinal section at twice life size lets students trace this path from blood supply to ureter on one model. The adrenal gland on top of the kidney introduces the endocrine system and the hormones that help control blood pressure and the stress response.
