How it is used
In gel electrophoresis, charged molecules move through a gel when a voltage is applied across it. DNA and RNA carry a negative charge on their phosphate groups, so they travel towards the positive electrode, and smaller fragments pass through the gel pores faster than larger ones. The power supply sets the voltage, which controls how fast and how cleanly the bands separate.
A lower setting such as 25 V suits long runs, while 75 V or 110 V gives quicker runs within a class practical. With three output sets, several groups can run their gels from one unit.
- Place the gel in the electrophoresis chamber, cover it with buffer and load the samples into the wells at the negative end.
- Connect the chamber leads to one set of output connectors, red to red and black to black.
- Select 25 V, 75 V or 110 V, switch on and check the reading on the LED screen.
- Switch off and disconnect the leads before removing the lid or the gel.
