How it is used
A desiccator keeps materials away from atmospheric moisture. A drying agent such as silica gel is kept inside, and the samples are stored in the same closed space. When the stopcock is connected to a vacuum pump and the air is drawn out, water leaves the samples faster and the low pressure keeps humid air from getting back in.
Typical uses are cooling dried crucibles and precipitates before weighing, storing hygroscopic reagents and drying biological or chemical samples.
- Place the drying agent and the samples inside and seat the dome on the base so that the O-ring seals.
- Open the stopcock and connect it to a vacuum pump with suitable tubing.
- Evacuate the desiccator, then close the stopcock before switching off the pump.
- To open it, turn the stopcock slowly to let air back in, then lift the dome by the top knob.
