How it is used
In the classic Leclanche cell a zinc electrode is the negative terminal and a carbon rod surrounded by manganese dioxide is the positive terminal, with ammonium chloride as the electrolyte. Zinc is oxidised at the negative electrode and the manganese dioxide acts as a depolariser at the positive, giving an EMF of about 1.5 V. The ordinary dry cell is a sealed version of the same chemistry.

- Inspect the housing and terminals for damage, leakage or corrosion.
- Identify the positive and negative terminals before connecting.
- Connect a DC voltmeter across the terminals to read the open-circuit voltage.
- Connect a low-current load through a key, and open the key when the readings are done.
Comparing the open-circuit reading with the reading under load shows the effect of internal resistance, and balancing the cell on a potentiometer gives its EMF without drawing current. The cell suits intermittent, low-current work, because it polarises under heavy continuous load.
