How the plate heat exchanger experiment is done
A plate heat exchanger packs a large heat transfer area into a small frame. Thin plates form narrow channels, and the hot and cold streams flow in alternate channels, so each plate has hot water on one face and cold water on the other. Running the streams in counter flow keeps a useful temperature difference along the whole plate length.
Students compute the heat transfer rate Q = m x cp x dT for each stream, the LMTD from the four end temperatures, the overall heat transfer coefficient U = Q / (A x LMTD) and the effectiveness, which is the ratio of actual heat transfer to the maximum possible. Comparing the result with a double pipe or shell and tube unit shows why compact plate exchangers are widely used in dairy, food and HVAC service.
- Start the cold water flow and set it with its control valve.
- Switch on the 3 kW geyser and admit hot water in the counter-flow direction.
- Measure each flow rate with the calibrated measuring vessel.
- At steady state, read the inlet and outlet temperatures of both streams.
- Repeat for several flow rates and plot effectiveness against flow.
