Hollow Glass Prism
Product Code : EL-LAO-10337
Quick answer: The Hollow Glass Prism is made from plane plates of ordinary plate glass and is filled with a liquid on the spectrometer table to find the refractive index of that liquid from its angle of minimum deviation. It comes in 25, 38 and 50 mm sizes in a velvet-lined case. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the hollow prism experiment is done
A solid glass prism gives the refractive index of glass; a hollow prism does the same for a liquid. The thin parallel-sided plates hardly deviate the light themselves, so the deviation measured is due to the liquid prism inside. At minimum deviation Dm, the refractive index is mu = sin((A + Dm)/2) / sin(A/2), where A is the angle of the prism.
- Level and focus the spectrometer and set the collimator slit for a sodium lamp.
- Fill the hollow prism with the liquid under test and place it on the prism table.
- Measure the angle of the prism A from the images reflected by its two faces.
- Turn the prism table to find the position where the refracted image turns back, and note the angle of minimum deviation Dm.
- Calculate mu from the formula, then empty, clean and refill the prism to repeat with another liquid such as water or turpentine.
Key features
- Made from ordinary plate glass with plane plates.
- Three sizes: 25 x 25 x 25 mm, 38 x 38 x 38 mm and 50 x 50 x 50 mm.
- Designed for spectrometer work on the prism table.
- One prism can be refilled to compare the refractive index of different liquids.
- Velvet-lined case protects the faces between practicals.
