How the kit is used in teaching
The kit gives a primary teacher one organised set of hands-on aids for the whole of grades 1 to 6. In the early grades, the 1000 plastic cubes in five colours and the counting rods are used for counting, grouping in tens and hundreds, and simple addition and subtraction, while the horizontal and vertical abacuses make place value visible. The clock model, with three hands and a 250 mm face, is used to teach reading the time in hours, minutes and seconds.
In the upper primary grades the focus moves to shape and measurement. The blackboard protractor, set squares and compass let the teacher draw accurate angles, triangles and circles in front of the class, and the geometric board and geometry pieces are used for building and comparing shapes. The demonstrators turn formulas into something pupils can see: the volume unit and capacity unit demonstrators link cubic centimetres to millilitres, the cylinder set shows volume as pi x r^2 x h, and the cone set shows that a cone holds one third of a cylinder with the same base and height. The fraction kit is used for comparing, ordering and adding fractions.
