How it is used
Surgical drapes isolate the prepared operative site from the rest of the patient and the surroundings. Once sterilised, the drape is unfolded over the patient, an instrument trolley or a tray so that only sterile surfaces meet gloved hands and instruments.
Blue and green are the customary theatre colours because they cut glare under operating lights and contrast with blood, which makes the surgical field easier to see.
- Launder the drape after each use and inspect the hemmed edges and fabric for tears.
- Fold and pack the drape for sterilisation, then autoclave it.
- Open the pack with aseptic technique and lay the drape over the patient, trolley or tray.
- After the procedure, remove the drape, decontaminate it (0.1% chlorine is tolerated) and return it to the laundry.
