How the model is used in teaching
During a normal delivery the baby's head must pass through the inlet, cavity and outlet of the mother's pelvis. Because these openings are not the same shape, the head flexes, turns and then extends as it moves down the birth canal. Seeing this on a real-scale pelvis is much clearer than following it in a textbook diagram.
