How the model is used in teaching
Air entering the body is warmed, moistened and filtered in the nasal cavity before it passes through the pharynx and larynx into the trachea. The trachea divides into the bronchi, which branch into the bronchial tree and finally reach the alveoli of the lungs. This model follows that route from the nose to the lungs in a single view.
Including part of the brain places the nasal cavity in its true position in the head, and marking the position of the heart shows how closely the lungs and heart share the chest. Together these give students a clear sense of where the respiratory organs lie in relation to their neighbours.
