How it is used
Flame photometry is a form of atomic emission. The sample solution is drawn into the nebulizer, where compressed air breaks it into a fine mist that is carried into the flame. The heat excites sodium and potassium atoms, and as they fall back to their ground state each element gives off light at its own wavelength, near 589 nm for sodium and 766 nm for potassium. A narrow-band interference filter passes only the wavelength of interest to the detector, and the intensity of that light is proportional to the concentration of the element.
Because the reading is relative, the instrument is first set with standard solutions of known concentration, and samples are then read against those settings.
- Switch on the compressor unit and check that the regulator gives a steady airflow.
- Light the flame and allow the instrument to stabilise.
- Aspirate distilled water to set zero, then aspirate standard sodium and potassium solutions to set the readings.
- Aspirate the diluted sample and read sodium and potassium together on the digital display.
- Aspirate distilled water between samples to clear the nebulizer.
