How it is used
In a moving-coil meter a coil pivoted in the field of a permanent magnet turns when current flows, against a controlling spring, so the pointer deflection is proportional to the current and the scale is linear. The same movement serves three roles: with a low-value shunt it becomes an ammeter, with a high-value series resistance a voltmeter, and with its zero in the centre of the scale a galvanometer that shows the direction of current.
