How the model is used in teaching
Mitosis is the division of a nucleus into two nuclei with the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent. During interphase each chromosome is copied into two sister chromatids. In prophase the chromosomes condense and the spindle forms; in metaphase they line up at the equator; in anaphase the sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles; and in telophase new nuclear envelopes form, usually followed by cytokinesis, which divides the cytoplasm.
A set of models lets students see the whole sequence at once and put each stage in order, which is hard to do with a single slide where cells are scattered at random stages.
- Mix the models and ask students to arrange them in order of division.
- Check the order and name each stage with the English key card.
- Follow one painted chromosome through the set to see how the chromatids separate.
- Compare the models with a root-tip slide under the microscope.
