How the model is used in teaching
Meiosis is the reduction division that produces gametes. It has two divisions after a single round of DNA replication. In meiosis I, homologous chromosomes pair up, may exchange segments by crossing over, and are then separated, so each daughter cell receives one chromosome of each pair. Meiosis II then separates the sister chromatids, much as in mitosis. The result is four haploid cells, each genetically different from the others and from the parent cell.
Because the stages of meiosis I and meiosis II look alike, a coloured sequence of models on one base helps students tell them apart and see where crossing over and independent assortment create variation.
- Walk the class along the sequence from the parent cell to the four haploid cells.
