Using a high-power loading rheostat safely

At full rating the rheostat turns 50 kW of electrical power into heat; over one hour that is 50 kWh, or about 180 MJ, of energy released into the room. That is why a unit of this size is set up with generous clearances and ventilation, and why its duty cycle and cooling method are confirmed before it is ordered.

In use it works like any loading rheostat: the resistance is reduced from its maximum to raise the current drawn from the machine, voltage, current and power are recorded at each step, and the results give load characteristics, voltage regulation and, with input readings, efficiency at full load.

1. Verify the resistance, voltage, current, phase and 50 kW ratings against the machine.
2. Set the unit to its minimum-load (maximum-resistance) position.
3. Isolate and lock out the electrical supply before connecting.
4. Connect the rheostat as per the approved test diagram, and check earthing, ventilation and terminal tightness.
5. Restore the supply, bring the machine to rated conditions, and apply the load in controlled steps.
