How it is used
A voltmeter measures the potential difference between two points and is always connected in parallel with the component or supply under test. A digital voltmeter typically has a high input resistance, so it draws very little current and hardly disturbs the circuit it is measuring.
The five ranges cover everything from millivolt signals, such as the output of a thermocouple or of a solar cell in dim light, up to 200 V. On a 3.5-digit display the largest reading on each range is 1999 counts, so choosing the lowest range that does not overflow gives the finest resolution.

- Estimate the voltage and, if it is unknown, start on the 200 V range.
- Connect the voltmeter in parallel across the component or supply, observing polarity.
- Switch down to lower ranges until the reading is as precise as possible without overflowing.
- Record the reading and disconnect the leads after the measurement.
