Transistor Characteristics

Transistor Characteristics

Product Code : SCL-EAE-11319

Quick answer: The Transistor Characteristics apparatus is a common-emitter NPN trainer panel with four analog meters, a built-in power supply and variable voltage controls. Students plot the input characteristic (IB against VBE) and output characteristics (IC against VCE), identify cutoff, active and saturation regions and estimate current gain. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the transistor characteristics experiment is done

In the common-emitter connection the base-emitter junction is the input and the collector-emitter path is the output. The four meters read base current IB, base-emitter voltage VBE, collector current IC and collector-emitter voltage VCE, and the two variable supplies set the base and collector voltages independently.

  1. Set both variable voltage controls to minimum and check the printed circuit, terminals and meter connections.
  2. For the input characteristic, hold VCE at a fixed value and raise VBE in small steps, recording IB each time.
  3. For the output characteristics, set IB to a fixed value and raise VCE from zero, recording IC; repeat for several values of IB.
  4. Return both controls to minimum before switching off.

The input curve resembles a forward-biased diode curve. The output curves rise steeply at low VCE (saturation) and then flatten (active region), where IC is set mainly by IB. The current gain is beta = IC / IB, or more exactly delta IC / delta IB at constant VCE, and the input resistance is delta VBE / delta IB.

Frequently asked questions

What graphs are plotted with the transistor characteristics apparatus?

The input characteristic, IB against VBE at constant VCE, and a family of output characteristics, IC against VCE at several fixed values of IB.

How is current gain found from the readings?

From the output characteristics, take the change in IC between two curves at the same VCE and divide by the change in IB: beta = delta IC / delta IB.
