How the four-stroke diesel cycle is shown
A four-stroke diesel needs two turns of the crankshaft for each power stroke. On intake the inlet valve opens and the descending piston draws in air only. On compression both valves close and the rising piston squeezes the air until it is hot enough to ignite fuel injected near the top of the stroke. The power stroke follows as the burning gas forces the piston down, and on the exhaust stroke the exhaust valve opens so the rising piston pushes the spent gas out.
- Place the model on a level, stable teaching bench.
- Identify the cylinder, piston, valves, connecting rod, crankshaft and flywheel.
- Turn the hand crank slowly through two full revolutions, pausing at each stroke.
- Watch when the inlet and exhaust valves open and close relative to the piston position.
- Compare the diesel's air-only intake and compression ignition with the spark ignition of a petrol engine.
Seeing that each valve opens only once in every two crank revolutions helps students understand valve timing and why the valve gear of a four-stroke engine runs at half crankshaft speed.
